Fake accounts on Facebook are more than just an annoyance - they pose significant security risks to individuals and businesses alike. Cybercriminals use them for scams, phishing attempts, and identity theft.

Additionally, fake profiles can spread misinformation, manipulate public opinion, and engage in malicious activities that harm real users and brands.

Types of fake accounts on Facebook

Some of the most common types of fraudulent profiles on Facebook include:

  1. Impersonation accounts: These mimic real users, often using stolen photos and details to deceive others.
  2. Bot accounts: Automated accounts used to spam, manipulate engagement metrics, or spread propaganda.
  3. Scam accounts: Profiles designed to trick users into fraudulent schemes, such as fake giveaways or phishing attempts.
  4. Fake business pages: Unauthorized pages pretending to be legitimate brands to mislead customers.

How can fake accounts affect legitimate businesses?

Simple: fake accounts on social media can severely impact a business by damaging its reputation and eroding customer trust

Impersonation accounts, for instance, can deceive customers by pretending to be a legitimate brand, luring them into scams that steal personal or financial information. A fake customer support page on Facebook, for example, might trick users into sharing login credentials, leading to account takeovers. Additionally, these fraudulent accounts can spread misinformation about a company’s products or services, making it harder to maintain credibility.

Businesses may also face financial losses due to fraudulent transactions, which result in chargebacks and lost revenue. Moreover, fake engagement such as bots inflating likes or comments, can distort marketing analytics, making it difficult to measure genuine customer interest and engagement.

Quickly spot a fake account on Facebook

If you suspect something is off about a Facebook profile, it probably is! Look for the following signs, before taking action:

  • A recent creation date with very little activity
  • Few or no real photos, or stolen images from other users
  • An unusually high number of friend requests in a short time
  • Generic or nonsensical profile names
  • Suspicious links or messages promoting scams

Step by step guide: how to report a fake account on Facebook

  1. Log in to Facebook
  2. Go to the fake profile by clicking its name in your Feed or searching for it
  3. Click the ‘More’ button (three dots) to the right
  4. Select ‘Report Profile’
  5. Choose the reason that best describes why the profile violates Facebook’s Community Standards - depending on your selection, you may be prompted to submit a report to Meta
  6. Click ‘Done’

If it’s a Group you need to report, the process is quite similar:

  1. From your Feed, click ‘Groups’ in the left menu or search for the group’s name
  2. Click the ‘More’ button (three dots) below the cover photo
  3. Select Report Group
  4. Choose the reason for reporting the group and click ‘Done’

How to report with no Facebook account

If you don’t have access to a Facebook account, you can still report fake profiles using Facebook’s contact form for non-users.
